Lesson 15: Exercieses

Over the last 14 lessons I have learned that mainly doing the work on a consistent basis is the key to recovery. I need to make sure I am doing the minimum amount of work instead of planning to do all of it and doing none of it. I have learned that my addiction has a purpose and I need to develop values that will fill that purpose. I need to focus on using my values throughout my day.

Lesson 16: Understanding Addiction 1

1) Addiction has helped me to relieve stress in very stressful times.
2) It has helped me to put aside tension so I can get to work when I need to.
3) When I sometimes get lonely it can numb me to that for a time.
4) If I use it as a reward it sometimes motivates me to get things done.
5) I have used it as a sleep aid.

Lesson 17: Understanding Addiction II

I) A compulsive ritual I regularly engage in is masturbating to orgasm using pornography. This involves several elements of the compulsive wheel:
1) Sensory: Self stimulation through masturbation is always involved.
2) Accomplishment: There is the satisfaction of finding one or several images or videos that satisfies my current desire.
3) Fantasy: This could be involved only in the beginning, often it is used as a trigger early on to “prime” the ritual to begin.
4) Orgasm: The rush may or may not complete the ritual, I may need to have several orgasms before I am satisfied.
5) Poly-addictions: I may eat junk food right after completing the ritual to continue the pleasureable state of mind. I may also play video games before or after and use the ritual to “spice things up”.

Lesson 18: Understanding Addiction III

Sensory: Self stimulation through masturbation is always involved.

1) Time: I will stretch the ritual out over longer periods of time, using sensory stimulation with images, video, and masturbation continually building up over time to maximize the amount of pleasure of the orgasm/s. It will start as fantasy and build through images and videos until I am over stimulated and need to complete the ritual. This ritual could go over in a day but usually ends of repeating itself over days or even weeks until it “resets”.
2) Habituation: I need to vary the types of media I consume to keep things feeling “fresh”.
3) Intensity: Over longer periods of time the intensity ramps up until I become over stimulated then I take a “break” for a period of time so sensitivity can return and the ritual repeats.

Accomplishment: There is the satisfaction of finding one or several images or videos that satisfies my current desire.

1) Time: I may need to complete the act of finding the “right” type of media a few times to get adequate feeling of accomplishement.
2) Habituation: I may need to find images or videos of several different types at once to be satisfied.
3) Intensity: The more the video or image I find matchs the initial fantasy I had that triggered me the more accomplished I feel. This leads to longer periods of searching for the right media. I may have to find several different ones to satisfy the ritual.

Fantasy: This could be involved only in the beginning, often it is used as a trigger early on to “prime” the ritual to begin.

1) Habituation: This point usually determines what type of media or “flavor” porn I consume as my ritual progresses.

Orgasm: The rush may or may not complete the ritual, I may need to have several orgasms before I am satisfied.

1) Time: I often delay orgasm to maximize intensity.
2) Habituation: I may have one intense orgasm or several less intense ones to satisfy the ritual.
3) Intensity: If I am at a higher level of sensitivity I may need several strong orgasms to satisfy myself. Usually the less sensitized I am I need more less intense orgasms over a longer period of time to satisfy myself.

Poly-addictions: I may eat junk food right after completing the ritual to continue the pleasurable state of mind. I may also play video games before or after and use the ritual to “spice things up”.

1) Time: I may go from eating junk food to porn to back again to continue the emotional stimulation as long as possible without overstimulating one mechanism.
2) Intensity: Usually the more intense the porn binge, the more intense the eating binge.
