 Post subject: COVID-19 and recovery

I was thinking a lot about this over the last few days and the impact it could have on so many of us.

For instance the SAA groups and others like them are closing for the moment, all having to switch to other means such as tele-groups and I understand that the isolation may cause quite a few of us to relapse!!!
It is times like these that those of us that use RN as our recovery means need to potentially post or keep in touch more often.

I am well into my recovery and have no thoughts of slipping, but then I have a wife and extended family that I need to care for more than anything at the moment, so my energy is well away from anything like that.

I would urge everyone that has potential thoughts to remember the coaching and lessons here on on RN and try and use them as much as possible to stay sober.

The COVID-19 virus is really bad for us.

Here in germany, it is allowed to leave the house only for shopping, sports (alone) and work any more. Other nations, like italia, are even more restrictive.
A lot of workers are forced to work in their home office to limit contact with others. Home office means a lot of video conferencing, telework,
chat and so on. My customer forced the engineers to work only one day a week in the office, the four others in the home office.

What do other people do after work when they are forced to stay at home? Well they are ways more online than normal. Online means porn, pixel-erotica,
chat, computer-games, video, television.
Even for non-addicted people this is a big challenge for their emotional health.
For people with porn-addiction and online-addiction this is devastating. Female colleagues appear now in video-conferencing/cam-chat and by this convert to a drug. The lot of teleworking is a big threat for people with online addiction.

Fortunately the days are becoming longer for most of us in this world.
Consider the current situation as a big opportunity for growth. Why? Because a healthy boundary setting and redefining boundaries are the solution to stay healthy.

I am self employed and found out in the past, that lots of home office is devastating for my emotional health. So i searched a customer where i work 95% of the time on-site. This has showed to be healthy. Now, with COVID-19, the situation is changing rapidly. I am forced to work most of the time in my home office.
What did i do? I talked with my customer about the situation and that i can't work so much in the home office for emotional healthy reasons. He agreed to significantly lower the work hours per week. This will lower significantly my income, but i do not need so much money. Besides of that, my opportunities to give out money are limited now. No bars, restaurants, disco, team-sports and so on. Most shops in the city have closed for at least many weeks..

Prefer phone conferencing instead of video-conferencing and cam-chats. This is healthier for us.
Go out whenever possible. When you are forced to stay at home, find an excuse to leave the home. Be creative.
Stay busy at home. Cook your favorite meal. Yesterday i cooked my first time thai chicken. Clean the bath. Do work outs in the living room. Have a sunbath in the garden.
There will be a lot of money distributed by states for workers in short time work and for self-employed ones with no more orders. Find a way to get as much money of this on your bank account. Be creative.
Do not go online because you are bored.
Stay abstinent.

Find a way to impact your time in isolation to benefit you in your life. Learn something new. Challenge a fear. Connect with family. Dig deep and focus on RN :)

If we all isolate and practice social distancing now the sooner things will return to normalcy.

Most of the 12 step SA fellowships have telephone and online meetings now, which I have found to be very helpful for finding support and accountability.

Podcasts are also helpful. There are several that are directed to addicts and also some that focus specifically on partners. For men whose partners are dealing with betrayal trauma, this could be a useful resource to listen to together, and discuss, as a way of helping her heal.

The holidays can be a time of added emotional pressure when family dysfunction runs rampant. Be gentle to yourselves and keep your goals simple and straightforward. This probably isn't the time to begin some wildly ambitious new project. Avoid all-or-nothing thinking and perfectionism. Prioritize self-care and proactive problem-solving.
