Release of Liability

Recovery Nation is a self-help, educational site. The insights, experiences, coaching, workshops and exercises offered are provided to you so that you may develop your own healthy foundation for recovery and/or life. Coaching is offered for those seeking a more structured approach to pursuing a Health-Based Recovery. This guided learning is to facilitate the implementation of a Health-Based Recovery into one's life/relationship--it is in no way intended as a guarantee that your full transition to health will be achieved. Only you can achieve that.

Coaching vs Counseling
  • Recovery Nation observes strict boundaries surrounding the responsibilities between coaching and counseling. Specifically, we recognize that coaching involves the education and training of those seeking to learn and implement a Health Based Recovery process into their lives. Within this goal, we will do everything we can to provide objective observations and feedback, and will use a variety of learning techniques to help you implement what you are learning.
  • We subscribe to the Health on the Net (HON Code) ethical principles.
  • We do not diagnose or treat mental health disorders. This applies even when Recovery Nation coaches have the credentialing/licensing to do so. We will, however, share general opinions and encourage you to seek counseling when the need to do so is obvious to us.
  • We do not permit coaches to 'recruit' members of this community into private treatment.
  • It is your responsibility to manage your own mental health--including obtaining necessary exams and ongoing support as needed. Coaching should be seen as a supplement to such a support system; it should never be seen as a replacement for it.
  • In situations where you are under the care of a professional counselor and conflict arises between the recommendations of that counselor and a coach on Recovery Nation, you have the responsibility to follow the guidance of your counselor. He/she will typically have a much deeper understanding of the unique situations that you face and will have a mastery of the plan that is in place to manage your recovery. Should such conflict in judgment occur, we will always defer to their judgment--unless it is obviously destructive and/or potentially harmful. In which case we will encourage you to confront your therapist for clarification and explanation.
  • We do not offer professional counseling in any capacity. Because of the deeply personal nature of the issues involved with the sex and love addictions, and the intensity of the emotions elicited...the line between counseling and coaching can be quite thin. If at any time a coach recognizes that they have crossed that line, expect open and honest recognition from them and for them to work with you to develop a plan for resolving the issue with a professional counselor. If at any time you feel that a coach has crossed the line, contact us immediately.

Forum Usage

It is our goal to maintain active, healthy community forums for you to use in both transitioning away from addiction and, allowing you to heal in the face of another's addiction. The coaches moderate these forums daily and will remove any objectionable material as quickly as possible. By registering, you acknowledge that all posts made to these forums express the sole views and opinions of the those posting...and in no way will be used by you as a replacement for professional counseling--even if those posting are professional counselors and our coaches. What is provided here are the insights, experiences and opinions of those posting...for you to use as you see fit in your own development. By registering, you agree to take full responsibility for what you do with the information shared on this site. You agree not to post any abusive, obscene, vulgar, slanderous, hateful, threatening or other material that may violate any applicable laws. You agree that all posts become the immediate property of Recovery Nation to delete, edit, move or otherwise share as they see fit to benefit the community.

You agree to refrain from sharing personally-identifying information (e.g. phone number, email address, address, etc.) with others in this forum, or to engage in personal contact with other community members outside of this forum. Because of the nature of the addictions being addressed, this is a boundary that is strictly monitored. Finally, while personally-identifying information will never be released to any third party without your consent, Recovery Nation cannot be held responsible for any hacking attempt that may lead to the data being compromised. Again, by registering with this site you are agreeing that it is your responsibility to not provide any personally-identifying information to the community.

Coaching in the forums are provided by volunteers with a 'take what applies to you and leave the rest' approach. You are responsible for what you do with the information that you accumulate. Volunteer coaches are here only because they have been through the process of a health based recovery (either as those in recovery or as partners) and have selflessly chosen to share their experiences and knowledge with others. Professional coaches on this site have all gone through (or are currently engaged in) a formal certification process through WCI ( and have achieved a level of competency that allows them to explore more complex and comprehensive issues relating to healing and recovery.

Confidentiality and Anonymity

The following are Recovery Nation's policies on confidentiality and anonymity:
  • This is an Internet-based site that is openly-accessed by the public. Do not post any personally-identifying information on this site. This includes your name, spouses name, children's names, place of employment, etc. You must protect your identity in public forums by not sharing that identity openly.
  • Do not share any personally-identifying information on this site (e.g. phone numbers, addresses, etc.) with other members of the site. Many come here seeking help for issues involving obsessiveness/compulsiveness and/or a variety of socially destructive behavior (such as stalking). This makes the sharing of contact information a potential nuisance at best; and potentially dangerous at worst. Don't do it. There should be no personal contact outside of the forums between those in recovery and anyone except the coaching staff here at RN. The exception to this is when that communication is solicited between partners (i.e. partner to partner; not partner to individual in recovery).
  • When selecting a User Name, do so with the understanding that others will be reading what you write. If your partner knows that you use a particular user name online and your goal is to remain completely anonymous...well, do the math.
  • All correspondence (including email addresses) with Recovery Nation will be held in the strictest of confidence and will not be released to anyone with the following exceptions:
    • You are currently engaging in felony behavior that victimizes others (e.g. child pornography, rape, etc.)
    • You are voicing active suicidal and/or homicidal ideation
    • You are engaged in recovery and/or healing as a couple and an Agreement of Transparency has been electronically signed

Public vs Private Site

Recovery Nation is a private site that reserves the right to modify, delete or otherwise edit any post of a destructive and/or inflammatory nature, or that lacks any substantive educational value to others. All posts become the intellectual property of Recovery nation for the purpose of providing healthy, comprehensive insight to others seeking help. The deleting/editing of these posts will be at the sole discretion of the Recovery nation forum moderators, Recovery Coaches and/or site administrators--but at no time will editing alter the original premise of the post.

Voluntary Participation; Right to Refusal

Everything that we offer on Recovery Nation and in coaching is voluntary. We do not accept participants who are not here willingly and who are not self-motivated to learn about and/or implement a Health-Based Recovery. You are free to end your involvement with Recovery Nation and/or its coaching program at any time. The workshops at Recovery Nation can be excellent supplements to your involvement in a HEALTHY twelve step support group. However, certain secondary aspects of a health-based recovery and a diseased-based recovery do collide. You have the right to pick and choose which elements are right for you.
